Trump Reportedly Refuses to Attend 9/11 Anniversary Ceremony After Organizers Reject His Request for a Political Speech

This man makes everything about himself.

According to people with “knowledge of the events” who spoke to The New York Times, Trump was originally planning to attend the event. His team even conducted advance visits to Manhattan’s National September 11 Memorial & Museum, a customary security measure when the president travels.

His representatives also reportedly informed the museum that he wanted to give a speech at the event. However, under the organization’s rules, politicians are not permitted to deliver speeches at anniversary ceremonies. The restriction is intended to prevent the event from becoming politically partisan and to ensure that attendees can focus on “honoring the victims and their families in a way free of politics.”

Trump has now reportedly canceled his plans to attend the museum ceremony.

Critics say the decision is consistent with what they view as his tendency to make major events about himself. They also point to past controversies surrounding his comments about 9/11, including his claim that the destruction of the World Trade Center meant he now had the tallest building in Lower Manhattan and his disputed claim that he helped clear rubble at Ground Zero.

Instead of attending the ceremony at the museum, Trump is expected to commemorate the anniversary at the Pentagon, where he will be able to address attendees.

Some critics are already predicting that Trump could use the occasion to attack his political opponents or connect current foreign-policy issues to the 9/11 attacks. Whether he does so remains to be seen.

Trump’s departure for his golf course in Ireland the following day has also reportedly been cited as a factor in the decision to hold the event at the Pentagon. But critics argue that, had he been allowed to deliver a speech at the museum, he would have found a way to attend the main ceremony.

Vice President J.D. Vance will reportedly attend the memorial event at the museum in Trump’s place.

The organization’s statement about the situation was reserved and nonpartisan, as expected:

“For more than a decade, the ceremony at Ground Zero has featured only family members solemnly reading the names of their loved ones. Elected officials of both parties have borne witness to this solemn occasion over the years, and we have been honored that every living President, including President Trump, has attended. Of course, President Trump is always welcome,” the museum stated.

For Trump’s critics, the most frustrating part of the controversy is the reaction—or lack thereof—from some of his supporters. They argue that the same people who have criticized other attendees for participating in the ceremony should also question Trump’s decision not to attend.

Whatever one’s political views, the 9/11 anniversary ceremony is intended to honor the victims, survivors, first responders, and their families. Keeping the focus on remembrance rather than partisan politics is a defensible choice.

What do you think?
