Trump Calls It \u201cLake America.\u201d Google Maps Appears to Play Along \u2014 But Canada Isn\u2019t Having It<\/h1>\n

Donald Trump can call Lake Ontario whatever he wants. And apparently, Google is willing to play along.<\/p>\n

Google Maps has reportedly changed the name of Lake Ontario to \u201cLake America\u201d for users in the United States<\/strong>, following Trump\u2019s executive order directing the federal government to use the new name amid his escalating trade tensions with Canada.<\/p>\n

The reaction was immediate.<\/p>\n

On X, users criticized Google for adopting the president\u2019s preferred terminology.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey you gave one of the Great Lakes the wrong name; pretty embarrassing mistake so you might want to fix that,\u201d one user wrote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Another questioned why Google repeatedly changes geographic names after Trump announces them, writing:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy do you always keep changing names of stuff whenever Trump announces it? It\u2019s ok to ignore that paranoid weirdo.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Trump\u2019s White House, unsurprisingly, celebrated the apparent change.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s official! LAKE AMERICA on Google Maps,\u201d<\/strong> White House Communications Director Steven Cheung wrote.<\/p>\n

But there is a rather significant problem: a U.S. president cannot unilaterally rename a body of water shared with another sovereign country.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lake Ontario borders both the United States and Canada, meaning Washington\u2019s preferred terminology does not automatically change what the lake is called in Canada\u2014or internationally.<\/p>\n

Canadian officials have made their position unmistakably clear.<\/p>\n

Ontario Premier Doug Ford posted an image of a giant sign along the lake declaring:<\/p>\n

\u201cLAKE ONTARIO. NOW AND ALWAYS.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was equally direct.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis lake is called Lake Ontario \u2013 today and forever,\u201d Carney wrote, emphasizing the name\u2019s deep historical roots and noting that it predates both Canadian Confederation and the founding of the United States.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Google also did not have to adopt the administration\u2019s terminology.<\/p>\n

Other mapping services have taken different approaches. MapQuest has continued using \u201cLake Ontario\u201d<\/strong> while introducing a feature allowing users to customize certain map labels. Apple Maps has also continued to display the traditional name, at least for now.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time Google has adjusted geographic terminology following a Trump administration directive.<\/p>\n

Google previously began displaying \u201cGulf of America\u201d<\/strong> for U.S. users after Trump ordered the federal government to use that name for the Gulf of Mexico. Outside the United States, different naming conventions may still appear.<\/p>\n

The Lake Ontario controversy highlights the unusual intersection of presidential power, technology and geography.<\/p>\n

A president can direct federal agencies to use a particular name. He can encourage American institutions to adopt it. But an executive order does not automatically rewrite international geography\u2014or compel another country to abandon a centuries-old name.<\/p>\n

Canada knows that.<\/p>\n

Other mapping companies appear to know it, too.<\/p>\n

And judging by the reaction from Canadians, Lake Ontario isn’t disappearing anytime soon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Maybe somebody should send Google a map.<\/p>\n
