A CNN panel descended into an angry clash Tuesday night during a discussion about the death of a 20-year-old Haitian college student whose Temporary Protected Status had ended.<\/em>\u00a0The argument quickly expanded into a broader confrontation over illegal immigration, enforcement, and whether individual immigrants should be associated with crimes committed by others. CNN host Abby Phillip repeatedly attempted to steer the discussion back toward the circumstances surrounding Pierre Damas Bel\u2019s death as several panelists talked over one another. But Federalist commentator Brianna Lyman refused to retreat from her position, triggering increasingly heated responses from others at the table.<\/p>\n

The confrontation erupted on \u201cCNN NewsNight\u201d while Phillip discussed a Washington Post report about Bel, whose family believes he died by suicide after struggling with what they described as the humiliation of being required to wear an ankle monitor. Bel\u2019s Temporary Protected Status had ended, and the monitor reportedly prevented the college soccer player from competing. Lyman responded that \u201ctemporary does mean temporary\u201d before raising the recent killing of a Massachusetts woman allegedly by an undocumented immigrant. \u201cOh my God, this is so exhausting,\u201d progressive commentator Leigh McGowan responded. \u201cIt\u2019s exhausting for you because your daughter wasn\u2019t the one strangled,\u201d Lyman shot back.<\/p>\n

The Atlantic\u2019s Jemele Hill then challenged Lyman\u2019s comparison, arguing that Americans are frequently murdered by other Americans without prompting the same broader condemnation. The conversation became even more contentious when Lyman questioned whether there was sufficient evidence to conclude that Bel\u2019s immigration situation and ankle monitor caused his death. She noted that there was no suicide note and argued that the family\u2019s belief about what motivated him was not the same as confirmation.<\/p>\n

Heated Debate Over Immigration and Individual Responsibility<\/h2>\n

Lyman then pointed to reports that Bel had walked into traffic and questioned whether his actions could have caused an accident involving motorists. \u201cSo you\u2019re blaming the dude that\u2019s not here?!\u201d Hill responded as several panelists began speaking simultaneously. Phillip emphasized that Bel\u2019s family believes the treatment he experienced contributed to his death and described the situation as humiliating for a 20-year-old. \u201cIt\u2019s not humiliation; we have a right to enforce our laws,\u201d Lyman answered. Hill countered that requiring a young person to wear an ankle monitor would plainly be humiliating, while Lyman argued that Bel could have voluntarily left the United States.<\/p>\n

Phillip again stressed that she was explaining the family\u2019s account rather than presenting its belief as independently established fact. \u201cOK, \u2018believes\u2019 \u2013 it\u2019s not the same as confirmation,\u201d Lyman responded. \u201cDo you hear your voice?\u201d McGowan asked. \u201cDo you hear your voice? You sound like an automaton. This is a person\u2019s life,\u201d McGowan fired back. Lyman then delivered another jab, telling McGowan, \u201cYou should smile more,\u201d before adding, \u201cYou\u2019re very angry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phillip eventually stepped in and attempted to separate the debate over immigration enforcement from crimes committed by individual undocumented immigrants. She acknowledged that crimes involving undocumented immigrants can be \u201chorrible tragedies\u201d but argued that those cases do not make unrelated immigrants responsible for what happened. \u201cEvery person should be treated individually, not as a group, as if they are all culpable for everything that somebody else in their group has done,\u201d Phillip said. \u201cWell, they\u2019re all culpable for being here illegally. If they\u2019re here illegally,\u201d Lyman responded.<\/p>\n

Legal Status and Deportation Debate Intensifies<\/h2>\n

Hill quickly pointed out that Bel had entered the country legally. Lyman acknowledged that distinction but argued that his legal circumstances changed when his temporary status was revoked. When Hill questioned how a young person could immediately obtain the resources necessary to leave the country, Lyman pointed to federal financial incentives being offered for voluntary self-deportation.<\/p>\n
