ESCONDIDO, Calif. \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0A 69-year-old Army veteran known throughout his Southern California neighborhood for his prominent display of American flags and pro-Trump memorabilia has died after being violently attacked outside his home, prompting a murder prosecution and renewed questions about the circumstances surrounding the assault.<\/p>\n

Kerry George Sheron was attacked on May 20 near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street in Escondido, according to police. Officers responding to reports of an assault found Sheron suffering from severe injuries. He was taken to a hospital and remained in critical condition for several days before dying on May 24.<\/p>\n

Authorities arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler, who initially faced charges including attempted murder, elder abuse, criminal threats and battery. After Sheron died, prosecutors amended the case and filed a murder charge. Butler has pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n

A Home Known as the \u201cTrump House\u201d<\/h3>\n

Sheron\u2019s residence had become a recognizable feature in the community because of its extensive patriotic and pro-Trump decorations.<\/p>\n

The property displayed numerous American flags, Trump flags and other political memorabilia, leading neighbors to refer to it as the \u201cTrump House.\u201d Family members described Sheron as a strong supporter of President Donald Trump, and the home had previously attracted attention because of its political displays.<\/p>\n

The prominent decorations have raised questions about whether politics played a role in the attack. However, authorities have said the motive remained under investigation and have not established that Sheron was assaulted because of his political beliefs or the appearance of his home.<\/p>\n

Witness Attempts to Intervene<\/h3>\n

According to authorities and local reports, a bystander intervened during the confrontation and was also injured.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors allege that Butler punched Sheron, causing him to fall, and then continued striking him after he was on the ground. The allegations will be tested through the criminal court process.<\/p>\n

Police said Butler fled the area following the assault but was located and arrested nearby.<\/p>\n

Following Sheron\u2019s death, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan announced that prosecutors had filed the murder charge and said the investigation would continue as authorities worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing.<\/p>\n
