WASHINGTON \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0As the first anniversary of Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination approaches, his widow, Erika Kirk, is reflecting on the year of grief, faith and family that followed his death, saying that her belief in God has remained a source of strength despite the loss.<\/p>\n

In a guest essay published by\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>, Erika described the difficulty of rebuilding everyday life after her husband was fatally shot at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025. She wrote about confronting ordinary reminders of the life they shared while raising their two young children without their father.<\/p>\n

The first months, she said, were marked by moments when even familiar parts of her home became painful reminders of what had been lost. She recalled struggling to enter the bedroom she had shared with Charlie and eventually avoiding the room for months.<\/p>\n

She also described the challenge of reaching family milestones without him, including birthdays, holidays and other traditions that had once been shared.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust Get Through the Next 15 Minutes\u201d<\/h3>\n

One of the most significant pieces of advice Erika said she received came from Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance.<\/p>\n

According to Erika, Vance encouraged her to focus not on the overwhelming prospect of rebuilding an entire life without her husband, but simply on making it through the next 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

That advice became a recurring source of comfort as Erika navigated grief. She said the approach helped her recognize that she did not need to understand or solve the future all at once.<\/p>\n

Over time, she said, grief remained present but was accompanied by moments of gratitude and an awareness that life continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cStill, I can stand and say without a shadow of a doubt that God is good,\u201d Erika wrote, describing how her faith has shaped her response to tragedy.<\/p>\n

Finding Faith Amid Loss<\/h3>\n

Erika said she has wrestled with the difficult questions that can follow the sudden death of someone deeply loved. Yet she said she has not blamed God for what happened.<\/p>\n

Instead, she described seeing what she considers \u201cextraordinary good\u201d emerge from circumstances that began with unimaginable violence.<\/p>\n

According to her essay, she has witnessed people returning to faith, repairing relationships, forgiving old wounds and reconsidering aspects of their lives in the aftermath of Charlie\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

Her reflections frame grief not as something that simply disappears with time, but as an experience that changes as a person learns to live alongside the loss.<\/p>\n

She also emphasized the difference between Charlie\u2019s public identity and his private role within the family.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo the world, he was Charlie Kirk,\u201d she wrote. \u201cBut to me, he was the love of my life. To our children, he was the center of their world.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Family Moving Forward<\/h3>\n

Charlie Kirk, 31, was fatally shot while speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in September 2025. His death led to a criminal case against Tyler Robinson, who has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to stand trial on an aggravated murder charge. A Utah judge recently ruled that the case could proceed and that Robinson is eligible for the death penalty if convicted.<\/p>\n

Erika has since assumed a leadership role at Turning Point USA while continuing to raise the couple\u2019s children.<\/p>\n

Her essay, however, focuses primarily on the personal consequences of losing her husband rather than the political movement he built.<\/p>\n

As the anniversary approaches, Erika\u2019s account offers a portrait of a family adapting to a life that changed suddenly and permanently. Her message is that grief can remain painful while faith, family and memories can provide reasons to continue moving forward.<\/p>\n

For Erika, the passage of a year has not erased the loss. Instead, she describes learning to live with it\u2014one moment, one memory and, at times, one 15-minute stretch at a time.<\/p>\n
