MASSACHUSETTS \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0A Massachusetts mother is facing serious criminal charges after authorities accused her of killing her two young children inside the family\u2019s home before traveling to Vermont, where she allegedly made a disturbing confession to police.<\/p>\n

Janette MacAusland, 49, is accused in the deaths of her 7-year-old son, Kai, and her 6-year-old daughter, Ella. According to prosecutors, MacAusland later drove approximately 140 miles to the home of her aunt in Vermont. Authorities allege that she arrived covered in blood and subsequently spoke to a Vermont police officer about what had happened.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors say MacAusland made a statement indicating that she had strangled the children and then attempted to take her own life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI strangled them and then tried to kill myself,\u201d she allegedly told the officer.<\/p>\n

She also reportedly said that she wanted the three of them to \u201cgo to God together, but it didn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the alleged statements, police were contacted and went to the Massachusetts residence. The two children were found dead inside the home, authorities said.<\/p>\n

The case has drawn attention not only because of the ages of the victims but also because of the family circumstances surrounding the alleged killings. MacAusland and her husband had reportedly been involved in a difficult divorce and custody dispute. Court-related reports indicate that her husband filed for divorce after approximately nine years of marriage and that the couple had recently reached agreements concerning custody arrangements and their marital home.<\/p>\n

However, the precise role those domestic circumstances may have played in the alleged killings has not been established publicly.
