While the lefty mainstream media is treating the latest resignation of a Trump administration official as some ‘sign’ that there’s brewing trouble in paradise, in reality it’s much less dramatic than that.
A senior aide to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Monday that he is leaving the Trump administration after approximately a year at the Pentagon.
Ron Moeller, deputy assistant secretary of defense for strategic readiness, said in a post on X that he had always intended to serve in the position for about one year.
Moeller was sworn into the role last August and indicated that his departure was consistent with that original timeline.
In announcing his resignation, Moeller also pledged not to publicly discuss sensitive details about his time inside the administration, signaling that he does not intend to become a critic of Hegseth or the Pentagon after leaving government.
“Today I submitted my formal resignation as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Strategic Readiness,” he wrote.
“When I took on this task for @POTUS, @SecWar, & @USW_PR_HONTata, I promised a year; another year away from my wife whom I miss dearly. The resignation takes effect in 2 weeks,” he added.
“I intend to go back to the Black Hills, recharge, chop lots of firewood for the winter, and ignore any and all journalists trying to get me to talk about my time in this historic and consequential administration,” Moeller went on.
“For those of you expecting some sort of Joe Kent career suicide, I’m afraid you’ll be sadly disappointed,” Moeller added in another X post, a reference to the former National Counterterrorism Center director who resigned over his opposition to the Iran war.
Moeller brought decades of military, intelligence and national security experience to the Pentagon position.
He began his government career as an Air Force intelligence specialist in the 1970s before joining the CIA, where he later served as a paramilitary operations officer.
Moeller went on to hold multiple positions and complete numerous overseas assignments during a lengthy career with the intelligence agency.
He retired from the CIA in 2013 after decades of government service.
Moeller’s “blend of intelligence experience and time spent in war zones provides him with a unique perspective on readiness, training, and professional education, all grounded in supporting the President’s policies of America First and the Secretary’s restoration of the warrior ethos,” his biography states.
At the Pentagon, Moeller served under Anthony Tata, the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness.
Tata, in turn, reported through the Defense Department’s leadership structure to Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg, Hegseth’s second-in-command.
Hegseth is reportedly considering a move that could dramatically reshape the emerging battle over who eventually inherits President Donald Trump’s MAGA coalition.
The report immediately sparked speculation that another heavyweight might join what could become a crowded Republican presidential field.
The Pentagon is strongly disputing the story, however, and Hegseth himself responded with an emphatic denial after it was published.
“Secretary Hegseth is not running for president, and his main priority is leading the War Department,” a Pentagon spokesperson told NBC News.
“All other speculation is foolish,” the statement added.
Hegseth personally responded after the report was published and was even more forceful in his denial.
“100% false,” Hegseth wrote on X.
“We told NBC that, but they just lie w/ anonymous ‘sources,’” he added.
