OREM, Utah — The fatal shooting of conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at a student-sponsored event at Utah Valley University has sent shockwaves through the political world, leaving supporters, students and political leaders grappling with the sudden loss of a prominent voice.
Kirk, 31, was addressing an outdoor gathering attended by approximately 3,000 people when gunfire erupted at around 12:20 p.m. Mountain Time. According to Utah officials, Kirk was struck by gunfire during the event and transported to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The shooting immediately transformed a political gathering into a scene of confusion and panic. Witnesses described a rapid response from law enforcement as officers secured the area and began searching for evidence and information about the attack.
Investigators later said the shooting appeared to have been targeted. Authorities reported that the gunman fired from the roof of a nearby building overlooking the event area.
